How much do built in shelves cost?

We've got alcoves either side of the chimney breast just crying out for shelves and cupboards. What would a carpenter charge for both alcoves and is MDF fine or should we push for proper timber?

"For built-in cupboards and shelving to both chimney alcoves, you’d typically expect to pay around £1,500–£2,500, depending on the size, design, number of shelves, doors and finish required.

Moisture-resistant MDF is generally a very good choice for painted built-in furniture. It gives a smooth finish, is stable and is usually more cost-effective than solid timber. Solid timber is worth considering if you specifically want a natural wood/grain finish, but it can increase the cost considerably.

For a standard painted alcove installation, good-quality MDF with properly constructed and finished shelving/cupboards would normally be my recommendation."

"Hi, for built-in shelving on both sides of the chimney breast, with 4 double-thickness MDF shelves on each side and a cupboard with 2 doors at the bottom of each alcove, I would estimate around £1,350–£1,450 including materials and Blum hinges.

This price would be for the carpentry work and installation, ready for painting. Painting/finishing would be extra if required.

The final price may vary slightly depending on the exact measurements and condition of the walls, but this should give you a good idea of the cost."
