How much does a porcelain patio cost?

We're replacing a tired concrete slab patio, roughly 20 square metres, and quite fancy porcelain. Is it much dearer than Indian sandstone once laying is included?

think porcelain is a bit more expensive than Indian sandstone once you factor in the laying, especially if you’re looking at a nicer porcelain. For 20m² though, I wouldn’t have thought the difference would be massive — maybe £500–£1,000 extra depending on what you choose and how much work is needed to prep the existing slab.

Indian sandstone does have the advantage of coming in different sized slabs, which can give it a more eye-catching and natural look. The downside is that because the slabs aren’t all exactly the same size, the joints can vary quite a bit, usually around 10–20mm. Personally I’d probably go for porcelain if the budget allows, but it really comes down to the look you prefer.

For a patio of around 20m², porcelain will generally work out more expensive than Indian sandstone, both in terms of the material and the installation.

Porcelain requires a properly prepared and compacted sub-base, a full mortar bed and, importantly, a suitable primer/slurry applied to the back of each slab to achieve the correct bond. Cutting porcelain also takes longer and requires the appropriate diamond cutting equipment.

As a broad guide, for a professionally installed porcelain patio I would allow somewhere in the region of £120–£180 per m², depending on the porcelain chosen, site access, excavation required, drainage, edging and disposal of the existing patio.

For 20m², therefore, I would budget approximately £2,400–£3,600, although a site visit would really be required before giving an accurate estimate.

A good-quality porcelain patio is more expensive initially, but it is extremely durable, low maintenance and much less porous than natural sandstone.
