For interior work, painters and decorators will usually begin by measuring the surface area, removing old wallpaper, paint or varnish, filling holes or cracks and repairing any damage as necessary. They may then prepare the surface with primer or undercoat before mixing and applying paint or hanging wallpaper.

Some jobs may also include decorative finishes such as rag rolling, graining and marbling. Paints and solvents can give off fumes, so suitable ventilation and protective equipment may be required when working in enclosed spaces.

Choosing a Painter and Decorator

When choosing a painter and decorator for interior work, you can start by asking friends, family or neighbours for recommendations. If this is not possible, compare several local painters and decorators and ask to see examples of previous work or customer feedback where available.

Always get more than one written quote so you can compare prices and what is included. Rather than choosing based on price alone, compare the preparation work, number of coats, products being used, estimated timescale and scope of the job. You can also ask for references before making a final decision.

Agree the payment terms before work begins. It is not uncommon for a painter and decorator to request payment towards materials upfront, particularly on larger jobs, but the arrangement should be clearly set out in writing.

You should also feel comfortable communicating with the person carrying out the work and understand what is included in the quote. A higher price may reflect additional preparation, more coats of paint or different materials, so ask for a breakdown when comparing quotations.
