Internal rendering or plastering can be a difficult DIY task. Plaster needs to be mixed and applied correctly, and it can set quickly, making it challenging to achieve a smooth finish without the necessary skills. DIY plaster products are available and may be easier to use, but larger or more complex plastering jobs can still take considerable time and preparation.
There are a number of types of plaster available, and an important part of the job is choosing a suitable product for the surface. Gypsum plaster is a common choice and is often applied in separate base and finishing coats. Different undercoat plasters are available for absorbent surfaces, while other products are designed specifically for skimming plasterboard. DIY plaster is also available in repair and finishing varieties, including pre-mixed tubs and ready-mix bags.
Repair plaster, sometimes referred to as one-coat plaster, can be used for filling wider or deeper holes in walls, such as those left after pipework has been removed. Finish plaster is used to create a smooth surface that can then be painted, wallpapered or tiled. Preparing the surface correctly is an important part of plastering. Surfaces should be cleaned and checked for absorbency before the plaster is applied, with any preparation carried out in line with the product manufacturer's instructions.
Plasterers carry out a broad range of work on walls, ceilings and floors, but some focus on particular types of plastering. If you are hiring someone for an internal rendering project, check that they regularly carry out the type of work you need. The two main categories of plastering are solid plastering and fibrous plastering.
Solid plastering involves applying plaster finishes to walls, ceilings and floors, while fibrous plastering is generally associated with decorative or ornamental features. Most internal rendering work falls into the solid plastering category, although period properties may also include decorative plasterwork. Typical jobs include applying a new finish to a wall or ceiling, repairing existing plaster, laying floor screed or creating decorative features such as cornices and mouldings.
If you only need to apply a small amount of plaster to repair an area, you may be able to carry out the work yourself if you are comfortable with the process. However, larger jobs such as plastering complete walls, ceilings or floors can be physically demanding and require careful preparation and application.
Hiring a plasterer can save time and may be preferable if you are unsure about carrying out the work yourself. Before hiring, ask what is included in the quote, check examples of previous work where available and compare several local plasterers.
Plastering a room can cost from around £500-£1,000 depending on the size of the room and the work required, including materials. Some plasterers may charge an hourly rate rather than a fixed price per room. The average hourly rate can vary depending on location and the type of plastering work required.
